Artist in Residence: Melanie Lewis

ARTIST STATEMENT

Melanie Lewis

Art is my first love. I bring to my work decades of experience observing the natural world and developing skills in drawing and painting. I use what I observe to stimulate my imagination. The result is art that combines realistic and imaginative elements, is colorful, usually joyful, and sometimes quirky. Others have described my paintings as being “unique,” “enchanting” and “visionary.”

EDUCATION

I worked for 30 years as a science educator. I seriously began my art studies in 1998 where I studied drawing and painting at the Austin Museum of Art and Noel Robbins’ Independent Study Group. I have been working on my own since 2004 and have been a resident artist at Austin Art Space Gallery since 2011.

METHOD

Currently, acrylics and ink on clayboard or gessoboard are my materials of choice. I begin with an idea and then see how and where it goes. There is a great deal of problem solving involved in the process.

EXHIBITS AND AWARDS

Since 2001, I have been fortunate to show my work in Austin at various juried exhibits, as well as group/association member shows. I have also been asked to donate my artwork for charitable benefits in Austin. Several of my paintings have won People’s Choice Awards and juror’s awards. My paintings can be found in a local Austin synagogue, a doctor’s office building, and in private residences in Austin, TX, Houston, TX, and Washington D.C.

Artist in Residence: Marilyn Rea Nasky

Marilyn Rea Nasky“My goal as a painter is to create visual images that communicate the mystery and transient beauty of our planet. I rely on visual memory, dreams, and feelings for these images of landscape, and natural organic form which are often based in “reality” but are imaginary to the degree that I only seek to capture a feeling about the subject whether it is still life or landscape, and communicate it to the viewer. My work is representational to the degree that it is based on nature. I paint what I feel about what I see with color and texture as structural design elements. I often refer to my still life paintings as “Still Scapes” due to my natural inclination to include what I think of as earth elements into my work.

My current work in acrylics has opened new doors of exploration and expanse into abstraction based on organic and natural form. These abstractions are visual reflections of earth forms, ocean motifs, and organic still life and are intended as a visual comfort zone where the viewer can find solace in organic shape and form, as well as rich, contrasting hues, and tantalizing texture.

The paintings begin with a loose and spontaneous layer of gesso and progress with layers of acrylic paint, until the painting takes on a life of it’s own and I begin what I call “the conversation.” At this point, anything can happen, as I work towards resolution. Once the painting ”speaks to me” I stop working on it. If the work doesn’t speak to me, I put it away for a while, and work on other images. This process brings resolution.

Each painting is a reflection of my rich an varied life experience, my love of the natural world as well as an exploration of medium. As I work, design elements and principles, and abstraction of natural form often take on the appearance of landscape within the frame of still life. These images are a tie to my love of the Southwestern landscape in the Four Corners area where I grew up and continue to have my roots. My viewpoint is very personal, engaging the viewer on an intimate level with the subject, inviting the viewer to see the natural world that surrounds us with quiet beauty.” ~ Marilyn Rea Nasky

Artist in Residence: S’zanne Reynolds

S’zanne ReynoldsAfter over a decade of design experience in commercial art with companies like SicolaMartin, GSD&M and Harcourt, Reynolds has ventured out into the world of plein air, or on sight painting, and impressionist fine arts with bold color, brilliant light, strong images and a movement and style uniquely her own bold vision of her surroundings. Her work explores spontaneous approaches to expressionistic landscapes and provocative, vivid profiles in portraits she renders.

Continuing to develop her talents, Reynolds has studied under contemporary masters including Ann Templeton, Peggi Kroll-Roberts, Huihan Liu, Nancy Bush and Robert Johnson. Early influences on her career include Wolf Kahn, Andrew Wyeth, Paul Gauguin, the Blue Rider German expressionists as well as her post-graduate studies in France and in her explorations of Europe.

ZanneTrailerWork done while faculty at the Austin Museum of Art, AMOA, Laguna Gloria Art School, along with exhibits and membership with Austin Pastel Society and Austin ArtSpace Gallery plunged Reynolds actively into the Austin arts. Viewing her present style preceding her national plein air painting tour this summer will enable the community to gain a deeper sense of the unique characteristics of her art now and anticipate new works at her fall exhibit.

S’zanne Reynolds paintings and other works of art are available at Studio Zanne, and can be found on the website of the same name, studiozanne.com.

Artist In Residence: Lynn Beggs

lynnbeggsfinalLynn is originally from New York City. She moved to Austin from Queens in 1991. She is influenced by the Italian Renaissance artists — Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli, as well as more modern artists such as Mexican Painter Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh, Modigliani. Her influences also include contemporary painter Christian Riese Lassen, who paints wonderful seascapes with marine wildlife from his native land of Hawaii. He became well known in the eighties when famous rock musicians like Van Halen bought his work.

“I’ve always wanted to draw and paint since I was a little girl — painting and drawing what I see around me. I’ve never wanted to do anything else so I keep holding onto the flame of creativity for others who want to see my work finished.”

The Austin Visual Arts Association Presents North Austin’s Fine Art Gallery & Studios

With eight artists-in-residence and numerous sponsored exhibits and juried shows, the tenor of Austin Art Space is notably eclectic.

The gallery embodies a broad range of aesthetics, from traditional landscapes to avant-garde perspectives, from representational to contemporary. Virtually all mediums are represented: oils, pastels, watercolor, mixed media and photography.

The subtle and the bold. The intimate, intricate rendering and the expansive, illuminating declaration. There is always something interesting, something unexpected at Austin Art Space.

As working studios, creation is at the heart of Austin Art Space. At any given moment, artists are likely to be engaged in some part of the artistic process — painting, mixing, sketching, composing, sizing, scaling, inventing, deconstructing, reconstructing, imagining or interpreting. The energy is palpable.

The gallery space is equally as engaging. Clean lines and high ceilings. Room enough to step away from a painting to appreciate it at a different angle and scale. Natural light revealing the detail of a brush stroke. The ever-changing selection of hanging work creates its own, unique atmosphere.

Visit during regular gallery hours or drop by and take a chance one of the resident artists is working in the studio.
