Artist Statement:
For me as a performer, creating art is another form of self expression. Working with acrylic bold colors and mediums and various viscosities inject rhythm and movement into my work. I achieve a vast range of textures using gels, mediums, pastes, mixed media and collage elements that give depth to my work. I find layering techniques a challenge, inspiring and absolutely liberating!

About the Artist: Hello. My name is Nia Olabesi, born and raised in Washington, D.C. I relocated to Austin, Texas in 2018 to be closer to my daughter and I love it here! I happily retired in 2011 with 38 years of federal government service and since then I’ve returned to my joy of being a painter, actor and entertainer. I am an accomplished jazz stylist, recording artist and singer-songwriter. I have performed extensively throughout the U.S. for over a decade, with my former jazz band The Nia Olabesi Trio. I am a self taught abstract artist. My medium of choice is acrylic mixed media and collage. I am currently a resident artist with Austin ArtSpace Gallery & Studios located in Austin.

Respectful communication is a central theme in my work, in my life and my greater wish for the world we live in. In 2001, I wrote a book, A World of Respect: A Guide to Making It Happen and have recently completed a second on Respect-Focused Therapy, an academic work for students and clinicians.

Donna Crosby is a painter and lawyer living and working in Austin, Texas. She was born in 1961. She is a self taught artist and a member of the Austin Pastel Society, Plein Air Austin, Austin Visual Arts Association and the Outdoor Painters Society. She is currently affiliated with Austin Art Space where she shares a gallery space with a number of other local artists. For the past three years she has served as a juror for Art City Austin and the Austin Visual Arts Association which she currently serves as Board President.
