Artist in Residence: Scott Bauer

Scott BauerScott Bauer is a fine art painter and sculptor specializing in abstract art. His work is geometric in style and represents the juxtaposition of emotion (color) and intellect (shape and composition). Through careful composition of color, shapes, and patterns, Scott’s work stimulates both sides of the brain. There is always more there than what immediately meets the eye. His art is a mix of non-objective and symbolic imagery that provokes thoughtful contemplation. Different people see different things in his art. The vivid colors and deceptively simple shapes immediately grab one’s attention and provide that initial “wow” factor. The analytical portion of the brain then goes to work trying to make sense of the shapes and patterns presented to it. Like a multi-color Rorschak test, no two people see or feel exactly the same thing.

Artist in Residence: Beverly Ann Deutsch

Beverly Deutsch Adams

Texan, born on Galveston Island, living in Austin since 1978 with only a short 7-month stint in California around 2004. I find myself a seemingly, terminally confused world citizen looking for the next logical step on the way to centering. I’m taking photographs, drawing, painting… and sighing a lot, this too?, because the Yippee Yahoo! moments seem to be so often outnumbered by the What the F_ck? moments in life and these works are my process of refocusing, observation, and prayers. Everywhere, beautifully, intriguing images, distract me from fears… give strength… move me forward. An acquaintance has called it my personal form of Tai Chi.

I work mainly in oils on canvas or watercolor with pastel (plein air). Impressionistic, representations of nature, the human figure and abstract feelings imagery.

Artist in Residence: Jan Knox

Jan Knox

Jan Knox paints her love of nature, from the viewpoint of her training as a Geologist and her many travels. Jan works in mixed water-based media on both canvas and paper. She paints with watercolor, acrylic, ink, pencils and collage.

Nature in all its brilliant colors and textures are the subjects of her paintings. The emotions and memories of the wonderful sights of the world — such as an erupting volcano, snow-clad peaks, the rainforests, the deserts, icebergs off Antarctica and man’s interaction with these remote places, all inspire the heart. She enjoys exploring nature, as a backpacker, hiker, canoeist and caver. She loves to camp out of the back of a 4X4 truck or in a mountain tent enjoying the sights and smells around her. She also is a cave explorer and surveyor, enjoying rappelling into a cave entrance or squeezing through a tight passage to discover the hidden crystalline jewels underground. She paints from memory, photographs and if there is time, on location.

She was selected as a finalist in 2010 and 2011, in the statewide-juried competition for the Hunting Art Prize. Her painting, AThe Steppes of Mongolia@, was one of 110 selected for the final jurying from a pool of 1600 entries. As a finalist she was invited to exhibit/sell her artwork at the Hunting Art Prize Gala in Houston, TX.

Her main focus this past year has been on cave drawings on canvas. Being very familiar with Natural Bridge Caverns in New Braunfels, the first drawings were based on different rooms in the cave. She has now branched out to include other caves in Texas and Grutas de Bustamante in Nuevo Leon, Mexico.
