8 WINNERS CHOSEN IN 'WHAT TEXAS MEANS TO ME'
2nd ANNUAL AWARDS SHOW & EXHIBIT

Full Exhibit Runs Through August 28, 2010

Austin Art Space announced the winners of its second annual juried awards show and exhibit focused on everything Texas, entitled ‘What Texas Means to Me’ running through August 28, 2010. The show’s theme is built entirely upon artists’ impressions of any aspect of Texas’ past, present or future. Winners were revealed at the Artist’s Reception on July 10 attended by approximately 250 people. The winners were:

1st Place – ‘St. Anthony’, acrylic by Jeffrey Brailas, Houston, TX

2nd Place – ‘True Tales of the West’, mixed media by Armin Muhsam, Maryville, MO

3rd Place – ‘Wylie’, oil on canvas by Janie Coleman, Austin, TX

Merit – ‘Innovation’, watercolor by Sandi Carlton, Leander, TX

Merit – ‘Mark’, oil on zinc plate by Mariko Frost, Wylie, TX

Merit – ‘Accountants Over Austin’, oil on canvas by Renee Harvey, Austin, TX

Merit – ‘Nature Takes Over’, photograph on canvas by Kathryn Paige, Round Rock, TX

Merit – ‘Violet Crown’, acrylic by Ellen Russell, Austin, TX

The juror for this year’s show was well-known Austin artist Phillip Wade. A graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, with a MFA in Painting from the University of Texas, he currently mentors and teaches at the Austin Museum of Art. Mr. Wade commented, "The Texas theme brought in the most eclectic and high qulaity submissions I've ever seen as a juror. The work ranged from the traditional to wild scenes of a Cyclops or St. Anthony in West Texas to Wylie Coyote! With too many choices for the top awards, I went for the eye-catching pieces -- the ones that jumped off the walls".

Valerie Walden, co-founder and director of Austin Art Space added, “Diversity is an understatement. We have pieces from all over Texas, Arizona, Maryland, Missouri, even South Africa. It’s really a tribute to the power of Texas.”

The full exhibit is comprised of 39 art pieces that were chosen from over 150 entries. In all, works by 34 different artists were selected for presentation. Many of the pieces are offered for sale. The exhibit continues during regular gallery hours, ending on Saturday, August 28.
